Celebrate WORLD BAKING DAY This Sunday.. (18th May)

I just ❤️ baking, it must be in my genes, my Grandma was such an extraordinary baker - a farmers wife, 7 children, her husband & all the farm workers. Back then there was little machinery to rely on. My mum remembers all the horses they had on the farm and how her mum would prepare baskets of food for the workers at lunchtime. Grandma had a day for doing chores in the house, yet baking was a regular event. She made loaves of bread, cakes, pies, biscuits, and also preparing breakfasts, lunches and teas. I cherish my early memories visiting my Grandma's house, where the glorious aroma of baking would greet me as I opened the back door (we always entered through the back!) Her apple 🍎 pie was simply divine, buttery melt in the mouth pastry, sweet yet tangy apples and she never weighed any of the ingredients.

My mum baked with me from very early on and I started to write my own recipe books. I still have my school recipe book and I use it all the time.

I think what you need to remember, all recipes are fundamentally variations of one. Here I've provided you a basic cake recipe, that will everyone can use, along with ideas to transform it into other cakes!

Have fun experimenting and see what creative concoctions the kids come up with too. Thanks to Dr Oeteker we have this day since 2012!
